write notes

by Emily Davidson

we used to write notes

little love letters
on looseleaf paper
during class

it was such a nice surprise
to get one from you

and it was never anything too meaningful;
how your day was, or
how you missed me a little bit

(we used to be so cute like that)

but now it's an argument
every time you forget to call
and i'd like things to be simple again
but they're not

(this is the trick with love:
it makes everything complicated)

and i'd love to be carefree like i was
when i used to write you love notes
during class
but we are different now
(the way we speak,
we feel,
we kiss)

i don't like the one-hour visits
for a fuck and a goodbye
and i know you love me but sometimes
i need to hear it

That last stanza really grabbed me and pulled me in as a reader, and a woman. Great write!
