I-80

by Leonard M Hawkes

I remember the old road,
The twisted, switching passage
Through this gray granite barrier.

And Reno's Fourth Street,
And the quick view of "the arch",
And Truckee as "little more than a junction."

Now forty years, and we glide thoughtlessly
O'er the long and trecherous summit
That once in winter vengefully devouered the Donners.
