Highway Four

by Leonard M Hawkes

The blackened path wound upward--
Upward from sage and juniper,
Upward through pine and fir,
Upward toward the raw stone cones
That stretch beyond the glaciers.

How much further?
How many more curves until I bend
Out into the endless azure,
Or drop worrisomely westward
Into the setting sun?

This looks like our journey through this life ending in a setting sun.
