Highway Four by Leonard M HawkesThe blackened path wound upward--
Upward from sage and juniper,
Upward through pine and fir,
Upward toward the raw stone cones
That stretch beyond the glaciers.
How much further?
How many more curves until I bend
Out into the endless azure,
Or drop worrisomely westward
Into the setting sun? 07/19/2005 Author's Note: California Highway Four--Ebbetts Pass
