Poker Face

by Lulu Alder

There are still moments when you look at me
that certain way,
and my breath catches in my throat.
The quick intake is enough to cause my safety walls built with playing cards
to gently collapse,
and my emotions are left naked in front of you
humble and raw.
And I have to turn away ashamed
because my pride for independence is wearing thin.
You’ve found a loose thread and are unraveling
the happy lies I hide behind.

There are still moments when you look at me
that certain way
and everything crumbles beneath the weight of that smile.

And I’ve fallen for you once again.

Jon has said it so very well. An expression of vulnerability. Of young love not quite sure of itself.
