I Killed Descartes by Jeffrey ParrenIn this melancholy melodrama
Where existence is prosperity
Yet materialistic gains are not
An existing to be conceited,
Descartes would be proud of me.
Even though I killed him, I
Realized that my survival keyed
The end of his thinking.
I heard not the woo-woo
Of the police, they did not
Arraign me for ridding this place
Of a great thinker such as he.
I realized that Descartes was right.
“I think; therefore, I am.” My senses
Are so fragile to manipulation, I knew
That I am the only one that exists.
So when the act was complete,
Descartes drew his last breath
And grabbed my arm, saying: “You truly understand my boy.”07/15/2005 Author's Note: Special thanks to Jasmine Sword for inspiring this, even though a small little conversation about road rage can lead to philosophical thought...

| Posted by Ashok Sharda on 07/19/05 at 04:36 PM Yes, 'I'' is the center of our world.Every thing else is just an extension. My mother, my son, my car, my country means any thing so far they are part of this "I", this world. |
| Posted by Rula Shin on 07/19/05 at 05:14 PM Yes, Descartes did have this final realization that he had "gotten through" to someone at last hahaha Well Ashok is so right, everything is an extension of this "I", the center of the universe. And well, perhaps Descartes was a great thinker, and the subject a great proof, yet still I think perhaps I am not what I think, but what I am is beyond this mind and this thought. Great poem :-)

I really like your piece... very thought provoking... It was kind of stagnant... in a good way though. You know how when you listen to “we never change” by cold play it makes you feel good to be depressed??? That's kind of how this poem made me feel. Like it's good to just shut the hell up and think. ahhhhh....
"This is our last goodbye... I hate to see the love between us die. You gave me more to live for. More than you'll ever know."
