I Blinked And We Were Over

by Britt Zimmerman

I had it all figured out
for a moment or two
but the fist in my stomach
is clenched again

And there you sit
behind dark glasses
and cable knit sweater
your jeans hugging all the places
my hands once roamed

You still pull your hair back the same
and your face is flawless
just like the day we met

And all those crazy dreams
that poured from your lips
just before I kissed them

They are imprisoned
at the base of my rib cage
and its like you never left

You throb just inside my temples
and brush between my thighs
your breath is still warm
against the nape of my neck

I want to call out to you
catch the corner of your eye
and wave hello

but she kisses you
and orders your coffee
exactly how you like it

and you smile at her
like you did the day
we first made love

And I swear you were gone
before the bed got cold
before my eyes could adjust
to the darkness you left behind
