ever the reaper courts

by Angela Cotterman

forget about the way we breathe
it is only life, after all
leave behind the shiver in our skin
when the night becomes wind
above anything else
be finished with sense
there is nothing everyday about us
we define
we defy
we deviate
from anything called normal
and yet, we are mistaken, daily,
for smiles and frowns
and little girls who dream
forget about the way we breathe
alone
and linger on the way we exist
in tandem.
