I Don't Hear the Ocean

by Thomas K. Hunt

I've seen you on your tower
A vision like before
At rest upon your balcony
out from the darkness of your door

Smiles thrown across the street
never land on me
They're tossed to another
I am hidden from what you see

Recapturing our memories
each time I view your smile
Longing for the time that was
Our time before these miles

The years gone behinds us
Separate journeys through our time
Forced to fast from what I love
yet the hunger fills my mind

Never wanting what I have
All my wants have been of you
Everyday that has passed
I've added to that truth

Living with my pain
Striving to survive
This empty shell remains
without you by my side

Thomas, the longing and pain are so evident, but beneath them is a regret that things might have been different. There are "what ifs," regrets, a simple wish to change the past, and a great big gap inside, that only one other person can fill. Still, resigned acceptance keeps the narrator moving forward in spite of his pain.
