are you my father?

by Kalikala Smith

Are fathers supposed to make promises
that they continually do not keep?
Are fathers supposed to pretend to smile
just to make you weep?

Are fathers supposed to disappear
and leave with little trace?
Are fathers supposed to hide themselves
so you can't even see their face?

Are fathers supposed to tug at your heart
and pull out all the strings?
Are fathers supposed to love you
by giving you lots of things?

Are fathers supposed to act like children
and make you feel you're older?
Are fathers supposed to be this way
just to make you bolder?

If this is true
than I don't want one.
I don't need someone like that.
I'd rather live without a father
even though he is my dad.

I believe men start off at a disadvantage in fatherhood, since they don't have an inborn paternal instinct, like women have an inborn maternal instinct. The learning curve is not easy, since boys are socialized to do boy things mostly (i.e., play ball, climb, etc.).
