you promised me a pony

by Barbara Griffith

You promised me a pony, dad,
you promised me the world.
You said you saw promise
in the eyes of your little girl.

You said you'd be there always,
that you'd never let me down.
Now you're off in detox,
miles away from this town.

You promised you'd protect me
from the boys and crooks and lies.
Yet you skip out on important things -
events which call for ties.

Maybe when I'm grown up
living with kids of my own,
I'll be just like you, dad -
running away from home.
