Last Breath

by Vikki Owens

I saw him die,
more like a shudder, a cold ushering
with legs drawn up.
Total body tension like his seizures,
another moment in his life, to pass,
and then
relaxation
and a glance at his vital signs.

Author's Note: when i saw my uncle die the most fixating thing for me was how long it took for all vital signs to flatline. the body stays warm, stays pseudo-electric, the purple, green, and yellow lines continuing on for almost 20 minutes.
