A Thousand Nameless Poets

by Lulu Alder

A thousand nameless poets died for this moment
of you blissfully enveloped in me.
Arms wrapped gingerly around blushing flesh
with my mouth imminently near to kissing your freckled chin.
Everything was bathed in serenity and yellow
lying in the kind of hush that the first snowfall brings.

The stillness was so comfortingly silent
that it felt natural to put down our page turners
and turn our attention toward the supremacy of words—
even short words, such as home, faith, adore, love …us.
And without saying “I do,”
we committed ourselves to the other
in a silent ceremony more sacred than marriage.

And who’s to say it wasn’t half a decade that passed in that half hour
with you resting in the cushion of my shoulder?
Your spirit flashes like the color of a hummingbird's wing in flight,
And you breathe it into me with every lingering kiss and whispered promise.
And I’m again thankful that I never missed that moment
when we both knew eternity.

Yes, they were eternal moments in timelessness. these associations shall never die.
