The Endless Trap

by Rula Shin

I fell in a trap of bubbling colors
Exquisite and unseen
Not long after the beginning of the New Year

Intrigued, I touched the surface of the pool
Wondering at the vibrant depths of its tints
To my utter disbelief
The ripples rolled away in squares!

Shall I leap into this unknown puddle
Which mysteriously dazzles the eyes
This anomaly much too fascinating
For the curious little cat to simply walk by?

Fearlessly, I jumped in headlong
Without a shadow of doubt
Aware of the power of the current
Pulling me deep into this beautiful trap

Sucked down into the whirlpool of
Soft mesmerizing shades
The meaning of depth unfolded
Deep within the waters of this endless trap

this had great imagery... ripples rolled away in squares... such fearless abandon too. the only criticism I have is you might want to use another expression other than without a shadow of doubt... it is just an-overused expression and the rest of the poem is so vivid and original. that is just my personal thought though... good work as always rula!

Falling into the well defined? Finding comfort in the familiarity of boundaries... the substance of the unknown is usually approached with trepidation, yet you seem to welcome it. This is an intriguing piece that I will dwell on for quite some time. The layers seem to overlap like the ripples you describe. :)

"ripples rolled away in squares" this line caught me like... well... a trap i guess. and amazing poem! it made me feel like i was staring into a puddle of oily water with the sun hitting it just right, except far more beautiful. i think curiosity would have gotten the best of me too. thanks for sharing.

‘I fell in a trap of bubbling colors, Exquisite and unseen’….well, this was enough to generate curiosity to take a cautious step forward. But as you claim and as I am trying to see from the other corner- ‘I fell in a trap’. The trap seems to be exclusively waiting for you it seems. Well, ‘intrigued, I touched the surface of the pool…………. To my utter disbelief The ripples rolled away in squares’ This, on the one hand was enough to generated curiosity but also fear. Fear of the unknown. But there are questions which this enigmatic scene presents. Was it just YOU who could SEE and feel ripples rolling away in squares? Why couldn’t other SEE it? Why didn’t other take this eventual plunge? Or is it that this endless trap was just laid for you? Were you the chosen one to take this plunge? Were you the one who choose her self in those moments of fear and curiosity, where as the others failed? ‘ Fearlessly, I jumped in headlong Without a shadow of doubt’…FEARLESSLY, where fear should be the driving force in a moment like this. Well, this is KNOWING. This is SENSING. This is what you knew without knowing that this trap is laid for you and you jumped in head long without a shadow of doubt. And as it had to be-‘ The meaning of depth unfolded Deep within the waters of this endless trap’ This is a beautiful trap laid for you alone, it seems. The depths seems to have waited for you to take this plunge and fathom. And needless to say, the pool produced those ‘square ripples’ exclusive for you to take this plunge and end this waiting. This is beautiful and so exclusively Rulian. Besides depths are deep when you take a plunge and they deepen further owing to this plunge. Can you see this?
