Maylynn

by Thomas K. Hunt

You may not know the worst of it
Maybe you don't even care
Am I just wasting time?
Is there nothing left to repair
The silence is so deafening
I can't even hear my heart
This love that we once shared is crumbling all apart

Oh Maylynn you need to know
When the love burns out, the darkness follows
Oh Maylynn I love you so
It's a bitter taste this pain I must swallow

I held on to my foolish pride
I found another place to hide
But everything comes back to you
You're the reason that I'm here
You may not even think of me
I wonder if you ever do
I know that you loved me once
I was a part of you

Oh Maylynn you need to know
When the loving stops the pain just follows
Oh Maylynn I love you so
It's a bitter taste this pain I must swallow

Thomas, your painful pleading to someone who doesn't want to hear you strikes my heart, because being hated by someone is much easier than being totally shut out. The first stanza uncovers the problem. Stanzas 2 & 4 are confessions of pride & an acceptance of Maylynn's decision. Stanza 3 is the turning point in the poem, because the narrator confesses more "sins," in addition to making one final plea for reconciliation. Divorce-at least the ones I know of-have never been pleasant and you portray this emotional rending without being overly dramatic.
