All I ever needed was a real hug

by Ava Blu

changed my identity today
(your last name was too heavy)

I’ve never been proud of you
because you lie, drink,
and get high

I remember waking up
hearing you pounding on our door
it was after midnight,
you were drunk, and
wanting to get me for the weekend

I pretended to sleep,
ignoring the sirens as they
carried you away

you witnessed my innocence
being born,
and
turned your head
when it was stolen

all half-hugs
and
crooked words

disappointment is crippling;
you never did teach me to walk
