Cinder Heart

by Nikki Benson

Clear as sun

To see them through my eyes

But the colors all reflected green

They called out to me

Join us beautiful

Spend some time with us dear friend

My heart won’t smile

But I move mouth

You’ll know my eyes and

Follow the rules of pity and pride

My world won’t change

This shadow won’t fall

Until I keep my word

And make my peace with God

I come for the festivities

With him on my mind and

A cinder block on my chest

The weight is almost crushing me

I don’t know how to care

For the people so dear to me

So dear

Make my peace

You’ve been so good to me

But I don’t

Want your sympathy

Your smiles and pretty lives

Won’t help me

Forgive me of my crimes

You’ve been so good to me

But I don’t

Want your sympathy

You smiles and pretty lives

Won’t help me

Forgive me of my crimes

So Dear

Make my peace

My heart won’t smile

But I move mouth

You’ll know my eyes and

Follow the rules of pity and pride

My world won’t change

This shadow won’t fall

Until I keep my word

And make my peace with God

Nikki, so truthfully and wonderfully said that our lives and the lies we tell ourselves (thinking others really don't see through them) weigh our hearts down. God sees though, and fortunately He loves us anyway.
