Fort Lauderdale

by Alicia Vann

Ocean water
Salting our expressions.
A slight smile even
For it’s coolness.
Here you had legs
Still strong beneath you
And you danced in circles
We made angels,
Although I already had you.
We sat on the line
And commanded the water to us.
It listened as it always did.
The water falling over itself to
Touch our feet.
The sun could not stand
That it was the last time.
It could not show it’s face.
But you never judged it.
It was perfect
Exactly how it was meant to be.
And I love you.

Author's Note: My Mother made one trip to see me in my "adult" life. By Christmas, she was in the chair that would keep her for ten years. This was my last memory of her standing.
