A Different Clock

by John Nivel

Watching the second hand of a clock
Time slows down
Our mind dances between thoughts
As the hand takes five slow steps
Between each number,
One minute passes
After slowly jogging
Around the clock face
My head begins a steady beat
Keeping in time to an inaudible
Tick, tick, tick, tick...
There is no tock
At least for me
Which explains so much
Other people have a tock
I have only a tick.
