Jack in the Box (Ending)

by Aaron Howard

the ending to Jack Dempsies deaths

Fade in.. Mid morning.. a nice room.. light blue walls, white curtains, wooden bedframe, posters adore the wall, everything from the clash to the cars can be seen panning over to the bookshelf of trophy's lineing the wall for baseball and football.. a numbered jersy can be seen tacked up next to the mirror

pan into the mirror.

It's a teenage boyabout 15 or 16. Shirtless, flexing in the mirror.. short spiked brown hair, Freckles and fierce brown eyes. He turns to look at his tattoo on his right shoulder, DumpTruck Dempsie.

he takes off his belt and snap it in the mirror.. and gives an evil look to the mirror, showing two missing teeth... he runs the belt back into itself.. and pulls it taught around his hand.. testing the pressure it can withstand..

there's a knock at the door and a womans voice can be herd faintly behind it... "Devon? You ready Devon? Your fathers leaving, don't you want to say anything to him?" He doesnt reply. He only stares into the mirror.. and down at the belt.. the buckle gleams in the pre noon sun.. he opens the door and walks down the hallway, taking his first right into the bathroom.

Interior bathroom.. blue and white tiled walls and floor.. old style two fluroescents light the bathroom mirror, filling the room with an erie glow.. you can hear an engine running outside.. something old..like a truck. the occasional bird chirping can be herd.. and words.. angry words.
Devon looks up at the bathroom door.. there's a hanger at the top of the door in the middle..he grabs a stool from under the sink and slides it up the the door. He quickly opens the door a crack and places the belt over the door and shuts the door. He turns around and places his belt around his throat.. and as he's doing it, he knocks his head into the hook.. 'Ow! Son of a bitch!' can be herd from behind the door.. with the belt slightly sticking down from the top..

Devon's mom walks hurridly back in the house, through the classic kitchen..then through the tv room, into a hallway.. with a closed door on her left.. and an open door right down the hallway.. she walks to the end of the hallway and looks right.. into devon's room. Empty.. She looks left at the living room and dining room.. but no devon.. she looks at the front door.. and her brown eyes dart around.. she walks down the hallway to her room and looks around..

Devon's standing.. listening. sweat beading on his forehead. Knowing she's only right down the hallway.. and if he doesnt kill himself.. she will.
just waiting.. waiting for her to go back to her bedroom with the clanking bottles and trash stuffed under the bedframe. Waiting for the tell tale sound of clanking bottles as she slumped into bed.

He takes a step off the kids stool.. that says Jack on the top. The belt yanks taught.. and a creak can be herd in the door as the weight of this child is placed in the dynamics of physics. Gravity takes it's fee on both the child and the door..

The mom hears this creak..as it echo's down the carpeted hallway. "Devon? She cries out.. Jack, is that you?" She stirs from her bed, walking back down the hallway, looking in both kids rooms.. looking down the hallway leading to the kitchen and tv room, she notices that the bathroom door's closed. She walks up and looks up.. 'What's this belt doing here?!? Devon!! Devon answer me!" She starts to bang on the door but the thump can be heard deadened against his weight against the door.
She backs up a step and starts slamming her body into the door... the first one just buldges the door.. but the second.. brings the door off it's hinges in motion with Mom right on top. She screams as she falls.. and devon's under the door as her weight falls steady on the bathroom door. a sickening crunh along with a puddle of blood splatter from underneath the heavy door. The Mother's screams can be herd echoing off the walls..
crying 'Devon.. devon.. what have you done? what have I done? oh god.. oh god please no..not my baby'
pans out
the house is dark as dusk settles in. A red pickup truck pulls into the driveway and rides up next to the brick home. A man and a young child come from the 50's style truck slamming the doors..
The older man muttering something about not pay the electricity bill about the darkness inside the house. he enters the side door of the house.. walking through the makeshift laundry room into the kitchen.. where there's only a cigerette lit in the darkness by the darkend kithen table.

'Moma? Is that you?' the father asks.

'You didnt fix it, did you?'

'Fix what mother?'

"The bathroom door.you bastard."

as she says this.. a flash lights up the room as both barrels of a shotgun spread death in papa's direction. Blood flies and splatters over the white cieling.

Jack.. being a child of only 2 years old.. not knowing what's going on.. only crawls under the kitchen table.. feeling the legs of his brother..he grabs to them and hold them tight.

Mama is reloading the shotgun.. a shell drops on the kitchen floor.. but no hand reaches to pick it up.. only the sound of a click and the heel of the shotgun tapping down on the kitchen floor.. Jack looks into the darkness only to see another flash of lightning and thunder.. to see his mothers toe in the ring of the trigger.. Jack bolts from under the table as blood runs down her leg. He makes it in the dark to the washing room but runs head first into the door.. knocking him unconsious.
He wakes up in a white room, with beeping and whirring noises around him.. a blonde nurse is patting him on the head with a damp towl around a softball size welt on his forehead... 2 stiches can be seen freshly placed..
'it's ok, it's ok.. You're safe here Jack.' His eyes go wide for a second as he flashes back to what had happend.. but it all seems hazy in the dark.. hazy in the consussion permission slips that your mind never fully let you grasp that horror until hindsight comes full circle..

Author's Note: this is the twist ending to the jack in the box.. his last death would be that of his own brother, which he'd hidden away in his childhood memories.
