hope

by Jayme L Helmick

I've been running in place
for over a year
Getting nowhere
My shoes are worn out
Heart bursting for air
Blood and sweat streaming in tears
I started this run with enthusiasm
Willing to run the solitary race
And prove my worth
Now I'm tired
Disillusioned
Pissed
And ready to get somewhere
So I'm climbing out of
the hole I've dug
As I trampled the earth in ignorance -
Climbing out and kicking off
With new shoes and a new heart
And new purpose
I face the future with new enthusiasm
My heart beats to a new rhythm
A softer rhythm
And I will run forward into the arms
Of one who promises to catch me
When I stumble
And I'm not tired

anymore.
