dead city

by Paul Marino

your hair looked good. evan thought so.
so did i, but i’m straight and scared to say anything

we would have hooked up
if it weren’t for all those people and my depression

you were funny, that'’s what i liked about you;
smiled when you didn’t have to

i thought the blanket on the roof was damp
and you checked; sweet

you watched me pet a cat until i got uncomfortable
and then you backed off

until i sat next to you
and breathed

Love it; you always do well in uncomfortable situations.

This is really great. I love the simplicty and bare honesty of it.

Well, the title sounds a bit gloomy but the poem ends on a positive note-'until i sat next to you and breathed'. I see not only life but charmful too despite the 'backing off'.

Yes, I agree with Ashok, I'm not sure I understand the title, perhaps in a 'dead city' that which is beautiful and alive stands out even more? The poem is just so lovely, and positive and this person seems beautiful and comforting. Well written and very poignant last lines :-)
