scrubbing the floor by Angela ThomasI move from tile to tile, in a circular motion,
like in the movies when a maid is scrubbing
the floor, putting all my weight onto my hands
and the cold rag in them. I move the grime
and the dirt and the pain. I want it to all just
go away, melting under the faucet every
few tiles. It takes me hours to scour the entire
house, but I do it, nonetheless. I never give
up on something I've started. I need a shower
now. I let the warm water pull all the grit off
my body, cleansing me like I'm being baptized
for the last time. I pour sugar on my body
and I rub. I rub for my mistakes, I rub for my
future, I rub the sugar into my skin, into my skin. 05/30/2005 Posted on 05/30/2005 Copyright © 2024 Angela Thomas
