cadillacs

by Frankie Sanchez

And it rained on that night when we talked about her teens,
she mentioned all the blood, I cringed
I thought no one could ever feel such pain.
She talked about his presence like a thorn against the flesh
and how much she wanted him to fade.

And then she joked about how in his second life
he'd walk with a limp and a heartache and how he'd collect coins
in a Styrofoam cup, she editorialized, "as biodegradable as himself."

She quickly changed the subject matter to talk about healthiness
as she told me to stop eating meat and everything that was living.
She recommended that I get rid of all my leather
I requested she put out her cigarette as I was choking on her opinion.

"You've lost a little weight," she said with a vengeance
I heard her stomach growl, I think it said my name
I think she'd swallow me whole if she had the chance
even after I'd eaten meat, just to shut me up.

After a moment she asked me for my views on life
I think I responded with something juvenile like,
"Well, life is a cycle really, we can't recreate the heat that started it all,"
and I think she laughed at me or at least at my response, as she said,
"Isn't it funny how our thoughts age like Cadillacs..."

She stunned herself in the remembrance...

he used to drive a Cadillac.

this would make great material for a short story--like one of those slice of life ditties where nothing spectacular happens but conversation. it's very narrative while not losing its poetic element. also, that last line is quite keen. i mean, actually, that's why i commented on it. just to mention that.

I think this is so rich and real. I can completely see the two of you. The images are arresting. Great stuff here, Frankie.
