Black Thread

by Jennifer L Banks

This black thread I give you
Hold onto it while I wander around with its other end.
It’s frayed and weak in some places.
If one of us tug on it too tight, it will snap.

I realize it has some knots in it.
I put them there.
I’m not very good at getting knots out.

I realize this thread might not be important to you
That you might drop it or forget it’s there.
But it’s important to me, so keep it safe.

This once was fairly strong thread,
It seemed unbreakable.
But things happen,
thread gets abused and tugged on.
It gets snagged.

Now I just stare at my end,
Looking at the knots I made.
It’s our only connection
I won’t tug on it
Because I don’t want it to break.
