if you'll let me

by Scott Cadence

Tonight on the pier, on the edge of my world
Your presence engages and sustains spyglass ways of seeing the future
I have a feeling the way your body holds the light of the bay will never change
It moves within the golden waves of your hair, bringing me, like the shoreline
inward and inward

I can see your intentions to take off the shirt that covers my mind
Making the shape of hands with the language from your lips
Coming closer to the truth and really trying to touch me

My barbwire bluffs have not been that convincing with you
I can feel your descent like a pen gliding ink over paper
Till our life-signatures overlap and curve in perfect forge

I’ve seen how you make even those agnostic boys believe by giving them just your name
But if you’ll let me I’ll show you a thing or two
make sure your someone, someday, somehow come around
Use love and respect like two bookends to keep us together

Tonight on the pier, at the beginning of my world
Crickets and the lapping waves against tethered boats make beautiful music
On the forth measure we danced bare foot near our clothes and the pain
We threw them to the shoreline and watched the waves carry them
outward and outward
