Boys of Summer

by Adrian Calhoun

After dreaming all winter,
the boys of summer took the field.
Royal blue and grey against green grass
and red brown dirt,
almost looked like the pro's.

A little rusty from the seasons break,
but by the dust of the second inning,
the cobwebs had turned into an artform.

They all laughed and smiled,
even stumbled a few times.
Honestly they weren't that great,
but played for the love of the game,
and every one of them had a lot of fun.

Oh to be a kid again for a day,
to be one of the boys of summer.
How I long for those times.
I miss the love of the game.

Author's Note: Our sons baseball season just started. They had a game sunday, first official game is tuesday evening. I love watching kids have fun playing for the pure joy and love of the game, makes me miss being a kid and miss my years playing sports.

Very expressive poem; love of baseball and childhood comes through vigorously.
