Happy Birthday

by Daniel Peterson

I've been hit hard enough
for one life.
You hit me with your best shot, kid,
and you knocked me down.
But I'm sitting here
and writing you this song.
Yeah, it's a simple note of longing
for things gone wrong.

And it hurts,
oh, it hurts,
in my dreams, they come sometimes.
I can't run away.
From your face, I cannot hide.

I've been dealt a hand
I wouldn't play.
I bet if you were given the same,
you'd fold it, too.
And so I wonder why you gave it
to me.
We were the perfect pair,
at least that's how it seemed.

And it hurts,
oh, it hurts,
in my dreams I have sometimes.
I can't run away.
From your face, I cannot hide.

I think I'll give myself
a chance.
I know if you were here,
you'd give me one, too.
So as you get older,
time gets over you,
and the face
in the mirror
does, too.

Author's Note: Click here to listen. Think: key of E major, with the voice imitating an early Conor Oberst acoustic recording... hahaha.
