Escape Belonging

by Richard Vince

His eyes are on the door...
Watching for familiarity
As he sits, stranded
In a world he doesn't know
A place he never belonged

But all he ever knew
Was this rain soaked city
Filled with smiling faces

But none of them smile at him...

He never catches sight of his reflection
In anyone's eyes any more...
But he sees other people
Reflected in him every day...
Shadows of the friends he once knew

Shadows are all that once remain
Left by the last threads
Of a once great light

The world was once a bright place
And this city, a source of illumination...
But the flame winked out years ago
And the smiles of the people
Hide a growing despair

He feels the walls closing in
As he stares still at the door...
One day he knows
He will be unable to escape
And he knows he moves closer
Every second

One day he will rise to his feet
And run out screaming
And no one will know why

Except him.
