Cinco de Mayo

by Bradd Howard

Today we celebrate Mexican independence
(my heart's not in it)
I must first find my own independence before
I can celebrate anyone else's.
releasing you over tamales and tequilla.
Crying into my cerveza.
Maybe by the 4th of July I can light my own fireworks
and POP into any celebration
but today victory eludes me
like that one piece of lint you can't get off your shirt.
