Sandpaper heart

by Bradd Howard

She said she was afraid of sandpaper.
That it would wear down her edges,
make her too soft, rounded, shiny.
She liked her heart rough to the touch, abrasive.

He said he had a sandpaper heart
(Getting it from the inside)
Grating against his chest.
Wearing down his resistance.
Resistance towards all things smelling of love.

Sandpipers and sparrows.
valentines and volcanoes.
slowly softening edges
this is why they were afraid.
easier not to feel.
Easier to ward off feeling with rough touches.

Author's Note: not sure about this one... I'm afraid it is a tad on the generic side... comments?

I couldn't tell what was coming next, line to line I was pleasently surprised. I liked that you wrote from both prespectives, male and female. :)
