Hansel and Gretel by Bradd HowardWe were two kids walking through the woods
you were the Hansel to my Gretel.
leaving trails of bread crumbs and looking for candied houses.
We weren't expecting witches, they were just something that happened along the way.
like two hands that find themselves holding each other...
Some would like to fatten us up... to devour our innocence
to make our plump fingers touch things other than candy or witches.
Oh Hansel... we could have been lost together... we tried.
They found us, they found us too soon
before anything could happen
plump fingers caress sticky cheeks
Time to go home, leaving witches and candied houses behind. 05/03/2005 Author's Note: This is the first of my poetry based on fairy tales (I started doing this before I realized Anne Sexton had already done it!) well at least we write a different style... Oh Anne...

Posted by Holly H Dunne on 06/27/05 at 09:04 PM i thought i was the only one who wrote dark fairytale poetry til this title caught my eye. nice to read a different take on it, enjoyed this one. the loss of innocence and what night have been, universal themes you explore here through a personal viewpoint. i like it. x |
