OIF: Devotion

by Jersey D Gibson

A soldier's job is tough,
running and shooting all day.
A soldier's wife is tough,
reading the news everyday.

CNN reports another carbomb,
was he hurt in that one?
News reports too little, too late,
no way of ever knowing.

Got his last letter in,
telling me how much he missed me.
Pictures become shrines, I start to cry,
yellow telegraph in my hand.

Funeral has come and gone,
a folded flag in my lap.
Casket closed to save me,
there wasn't much left of him.

Two men in Class A's,
tell me he did his duty.
He fought for the freedom of America,
but he isn't free no more.

Now I watch the news today,
nothing more than habit.
Seems there was another car bomb,
wondering, who else got hurt?
