illegal smile
by Charlie Morgan
a spark of flame from a cheap lighter
brightens my day as i make smoke
with a weed that turns
to a flower
in my mind.
for 14.9 miles i drive,
an illegal smile my guide,
into the galleys of today,
whirlwinds made from yesterday's
meetings and greetings.
t.h.c. clasps blood cells
as they rush by on their way
through my body
never stopping
always moving.
and i think about
the no-name Yesterdays
that can't be found
somewhere, sometime
in my blank-walled memory.
inwardly my mind is searching
for tomorrow's new moment
yet the day is now growing ashy-brown;
no longer a visitor of dead dreams
but of dreams forgotten.
i smile an illegal smile.
