To Try Again

by Jennifer L Banks

I quote: “I have seen war
and I will not bring those battles
to your bed”

I answer: "Then come to my bed
and heal my heart
so that you may know me again."

My skin is already raw
from scrubbing myself clean
with a rusted wire brush.
I am not pure or white
as the driven snow.
I’ve scrubbed myself clean
under showers of emotions

I cast away old fears and wars
down the drain with the bathwater.
You’re holding my towel to dry myself off.
Wrap me up in its warmth and security
as I stand here cold and naked before you.

Is it too late, to try again.?
Come back to me
Come make me smile
If only for a little while.
