A Critique, Unwarranted

by Amanda J Cobb

Celibacy is your fishhook
for praise
and witchcraft
an empty ritual of
scents and attention.

A Goddess-worshipper,
earth maiden, yet
you stockpile shoes
and CDs as if
your soul depended on them.

Piercings decorate you,
with Ohm and Libra
intertwining in ink on your back;
you are neither Hindu
nor an astrologist.

You explain the marks
like you own them,
superior - like you
exemplify and know
what they actually mean.

You live for excuses,
rather than reasons.
You are different, yes,
but only for the sake
of the label.

Author's Note: Overly harsh, in actuality. This is about one of my best friends. I don't usually think this way about her, but once in awhile she does something that just doesn't fit with what she proclaims herself to be, and I get the feeling she just likes the titles. *shrugs* Still love her, though.

Even though the title says "Unwarranted," analysis and pride in your friends is a factor of your relationship. You love your friends becaue who they are, who they aren't, and who they are to you. In this case, maybe she provides you with an understanding of ways you are not, and those are ways to be proud of yourself. In no means does that say you are friends with her for that reason only, but you can also help her see the err in her ways and maybe change for the better, on her own terms. I really like the introspection you have taken into her life, as well as I am sure you do with others. It shows how much you care how you present yourself, as well as people close to you represent themselves, as it is a direct reflection of you in ways as well. ~JPP

I think this was written and illustrated very uniquely. I even felt like you could be critiquing me and it makes me think about Who I Am. And I thank you for that. Bravo!
