Now be my dad (talking to his girlfriend on the phone)

by Paul Marino

Now pretend to listen
Now ask a question
Now answer a different question
Now be meek
Now say now
Now ask second and third consecutive questions without listening to the first be answered
Now say yeah
Now let out a squeal; show excitement!
Now start to get a little looser, and say oh to prove it
Now ask, and even listen to answer of question
Now say hm
Now listen
Now cough
Now say oh
Now ask one question three different ways and insert ah and oh
Now yawn
Now insert Bush-like silence between words
Now say now here
Now get a little excited
Now say yeah, hm
Now ask about age of a person, seem interested
Now start thinking, and mumble
Now walk the dog this conversation is
Now talk about the new kitchen, AGAIN!
Now tell story, become slightly racist
Now get lower, see what you can muster up
Now become like a lawyer at lunch
Now say yeah twice, and talk about sending two letters two weeks ago
Now hit your peak, say at least to execute backhanded compliment
Now throw hm into the busy fire
Now say no and yes and degrade someone because of their weight
Now say hello to Rich on the other line, then lie to girlfriend about him saying he’ll call back
Now get delicate in tone, as you describe something delicate
Now get old lady voice and speak of jewelry and comforters
Now question yourself, but not really, because, “what could you do?”
Now deliver the dining room set story
Now say 624, like a pussy drill sergeant
Now start to get mischievous, which is your specialty; go ahead, serve it up
Now you’re doing well, you’re lost in conversation
Now forget what a shitty father you were
Now say one big lot
Now talk about a table
Now opera
Now say it how your father says it, hmmm
Now act slightly excited; offer up a story you’ll make up along the way
Now remember to make it a mischievous story, in which you are the hero
Now say cupboard
Now say yeah, right, hm, because you’re really listening
Now, like a 3-2 pitch, give silence
Now say NO!
Now the stadiums emptied
Now realize you’re not my father
Now describe a house; it’s easier than feelings
Now get moderately excited about the layout
Now say hm, because you’re really not thinking
Now say hm
Now babble like a baby
Now describe the old people; you’ve seen a lot of them
Now grunt, after you ask a pointless question
Now run your massager, and say hm a little longer
Now say yeah, why not
Now say yeah, which sounds like giddy up when the massager hits your mouth
Now act cool and say, oh, I heard that, yeah
Now ask a question, follow it with an oh
Now become nice, and ask another question
Now say oh, oh
Now talk about tomorrow, it’s a way to wind down the conversation
Now tell the longest winded story of the night because you’ll soon be getting off
Now say something about being sick & nauseous
Now talk about what you hear at work about hospitals
Now carry your words through a yawn
Now admit you’re older, through a personal story
Now talk about how you got your hand cut by a lawnmower when you were four, with a really light voice
Now become more confident, because you’re showing off
Now repeat line to your story you want her to get/become impressed by
Now tell really sick saliva story from hospital
Now say for years, but not any more
Now say yeah, and sound cool
Now talk about how you’ll get the mold, say ok a few times, and then say goodbye
Now hang up the phone; stumble with it
Now go to your sons room on your way to the bathroom, and yell, through the door, oh, son
Now hear response, yeah, and say, call Rich back, to which son says, ok
Now scurry to the bathroom
Now make no noise

I really love the way you start to come through with this poem, then back off and try to be objective again. after a while, I stopped reading the nows- but I like them there, they tie the poem together, present a false frame that you're simply describing moments as they happen-- instead, it's more deeply rooted than an overheard conversation. (good)
