Nearly Neighbour

by Richard Vince

Are you like me?
Do you feel incongruous
Living in this small gap
Between the factories?
Or is this where you
Feel you belong?

I always keep an eye out
For you whenever I
Pass your house, in case
It should find your
Barely remembered face
To rest upon and
Commit to posterity in
Some echelon of my mind.

I know I know not
Who you are, but
Something tells me
We're the same, you and I,
In some fundamental,
Non specific way that
Binds us together on
An unfathomable level
Of blind empathy.

Perhaps, indeed, these same
Thoughts are appearing in
Your mind now, wherever
My mind imagines you to be.
In a bed in an unfamiliar
Town, surrounded by
Temporary non strangers.
Or in the arms of a lover.
Or in that house with
Nonchalance and inconspicuousness
That always makes it
Stand out in my memory.

But such is the loneliness
Of this situation that,
Although I often walk past
Your house, you never
Walk past mine.
