The boy who replaced Daddy

by Amanda Bullington

Where is Daddy?
His fate is set in sidewalk chalk,
Embedded in the innocent phrase,
"Mommy <3's Christopher."

Where has daddy gone,
and why is his name no longer capitalized
Like "Mommy's Man?" and why has Mommy
Changed her name?

Who was daddy anyway?
All I remember is this boy who's taken daddy's
Bedsheets and powertools, who spends hours eyeing
Daddy's secret stash from the cellar door.

But he's not daddy;
He'll never pass that threshold because
He knows it entombs daddy's spirits, and
Mommy would cry if he took that last remnant away.

Author's Note: Cellar door is supposed to be the most beautiful phrase in the English language, when spoken aloud.
