Haiku of Haikus

by Kourosh Taheri-Golvarzi

Popular haikus
are very misundersood
as they're thought to be

solemn, not to be laughed at,
though these "amusement poems" were funny
long ago when swords would be

swung about
and stabbed like pencils
to stencils

but today, haikus,
ill-taught and misunderstood,
make us think for free!

Author's Note: I was talking to a friend of mine about haikus, and she suggested that I write a haiku about haikus. Now, consider that the old form of the word "haiku" literally means "amusement poem". The form wasn't meant to be taken seriously!! I mean, honestly, 5-7-5?? Come on people!! So I wrote this not as an exact haiku, but as a haiku derivation with a standard haiku form as the first and last stanzas, and modified haiku forms as the 2nd and 3rd. The scheme is: syllables: 5-7-5 , 7-9-7 , 3-5-3 , 5-7-5 rhyme: A-B-C , D-E-E , F-G-G , A-B-C (okay, so haikus don't rhyme, but my extended haiku does ) In any case, enjoy the haiku. P.S. Score yourself 575 bonus haiku-esqe points if you can tell how many times the word "haiku" is in this description...
