discontent: her dress promised heaven

by Olivia Weinkein

crushing life under fingertips
while she's wearing a dress you sware
you can see heaven in
lady bugs swarming the clothesline
while you contemplate what to do with
these minutes
before you lose another hour
there are voices on the radio
they all say the same thing
getting up to switch it off only
to sit back down again
watching out the window
praying for another chance to
really live
while she's wearing a dress
you once swore you could
see heaven in.
