mankind's first caucus
had a carcass
at its gathering.

fire sent from Prometheus
to the lowly gods below.
by chance
did we then begin
to see others as ourself.
neo-cortical strings began to play
common tunes of sharing.
as we emerged from our first break
with the monster-limbic system.

love had no name only mere rumblings
in the twitching nerve endings.
then the first stone was moved
at an evening's camfire.
and a place closer to another
was sought.
and a synergetic association occurred,
both minds and souls moved.

Self-hood was discovered, as was Mine
Yours, and Ours.
unchallenged independence
was still the hang-fire
and cohesion and unity
fought for a gripping-hold.
until millions of years later
when the balance
was turned and a society emerged.
still, today a battle-royal exists
and the outcome,
still, unguessed.
