Before

by Kitty Ness

I was in a world full of cactus
spiny, metalwork creatures
with arid bristled hearts
and eyes like chalk

they painted their faces and marched,
creeping along to the standard
of a life that is pastel and clear
one happy glistening robot looks into a mirror
and is reflected one thousand times over

I breathed, I dreamed, I sniffed
like a dog
for the bread and the yolk
of the earth-

and it wasn't there.
