Huddled on a rainy day by the staircase

by Melanie J Yarbrough

I've found that it annoys me
the way you sit three seats down instead
of the empty one beside me.
like before-
I find you tugging at the little hairs on my neck-

they think it's shakespeare
how I like your sideways smile
and your backpack pulled high up
and how you wear that yellow shirt
too much.
I'd like to wear it once

oh, that was so great; simple, delicate, real, and vivid. i love yellow shirts, or anything yellow for that matter. i don't think i even own a yellow shirt. i may want to wear that one once also.

There seems to be a familiarity when you mention "that yellow shirt." I suppose everyone attaches memories to tangible articles. I love this piece. I've enjoyed finding some treasures among your library.

i threw the yellow shirt away by accident. i threw all my clothes away when i put them in a trash bag to bring to mom's for wash. i left the bag on the curb with all the other real trash i was bringing out.
