My Poor Daughter

by Charlie Morgan

i attended lemaze, kissing mother-to-be;
and, in between kisses, telling her to push!
and you breathing amnio, looking thru skin at me.

pillow in hand we walked, mother-to-be waddling
weakly we waited you to BE.
but, little did we know you'd be dawdling.

after nine months of our expecting
you arrived with me not in the room.
no epidural, so i was left pacing.

born in early a. m., wet, a hundred feet too,
wrinkled, red, stretching, but i was sad.
was i wrong? could this be you?

i was hurt 'cause i couldn't see you
erupting from the warmth and darkness
and the wet home you knew.

so, i cried one tear for your mama and me
then one for you because of the future
that awaited you and thru you--me.

"i had a girl" the nurse tried to sound excited.
but too many fathers-to-be had made her droll.
born to me a girl, the nurse acted slighted.

that she could'nt give the very best news
that, i had a son! forever and he's mine.
i know she was thinking, 'poor fool.'

if he'd had a son, he'd be so proud
like all the other daddies i'd seen before
but alas, i's just one in the crowd

who heard ger wish, she silently whined
that you'd had a girl this try, sorry!
maybe, gleefully, she implied, next time!

it'll be a boy and you can be proud!
instead of a citzen holding second place
instead of girl-woman who must bow

to the man's world each and every day.
choices, salaries, directions no matter
and a second-class human in every way.

so, i got angry about her demeanor,
and the world that made her so.
but i wised-up myself and forgave her.

here, i'd gotten this precious gift.
and there's only one YOU to go around for the world.
and the universe's trust gave me a lift.

you are the wunderkind, holy star-stuff.
and they twinkle brighter becuase of you.
i need nothing more, you're enough.
