Fear

by Jeffrey Parren

As time goes by
My exposure causes comfort.
Maybe a false one at that,
For the sights
Leave me, over,
Exposed to all the pain.

Momentary lapses remind
Of the monotonous toil,
Of worry and fright,
The feelings so unwanted.
The “it” of “it-ing,”
The “it” that multiplies.

If it causes itself,
Maybe I cause myself?
To be the way,
I want to not want.
The feelings so powerful,
The results so futile.

It shows red, black,
I see green, blue.
I like lying to myself,
How couldn’t you?
As time goes by
My exposure causes comfort.

I smile in sympathy. You've intriguingly expressed feelings many if most have had at one time or another I think.
