Bridges

by Richard Vince

There's a glow in the sky...
The Sun setting...
Over a city on fire
We burned the bridges...
Because we didn't like the other side

And then the sunrise came.
Illuminated the desolation
And made us see the wreckage
That we made for ourselves...

For every beginning
There is an ending
If we destroy the end
We may never begin at all
Or maybe the end
Is to destroy the beginning?

I am just an old man
Who wears a young man's shoes
My life is to sit here...
I speculate
As to what I think about

And I watch.

I watch others living
In the hope that, some day
I too will live
And work out what I have been doing
For all these years

I wonder when I watch
How many are alive...
And how many just think they are
And how many know they are not.

And I wonder which I am
And I wonder if I will ever know

There is a man who killed thousands
And another who saved thousands
And I wonder which man I am

And I wondered which I was
As I watched the bridges burn...
