OTHERS

by W. Mahlon Purdin

They mystify us.
They make us happy, crazy, wondering,
They make us question, doubt, and run,
They leave us filled, empty, shaken, and stirred.

They burst into our lives and destroy everything.
They burst into our lives and renew everything.
They burst into our lives, set bombs and run.
They burst into our lives and take the pain away.

They are kind to us when we are young.
They scare us as we grow.
They take our hand and say, "Don't worry,"
"Things get better all the time."

They help us up and down the stairs,
And they threaten to commit us.
They wash our faces and our feet
We wonder how we deserve such love.

And they all are marching in a line beside us
From the young to the old to dead.
And we watch and listen and wonder
At all they did and all they said.
