Crime wave of the future

by Amanda Bullington

Ain't no crime to be done brotha'
That ain't already been done.
Ain't no dimes worth stealin',
No street signs left standin',
Nobody who'd care if they was
Missin' anyway.
          There's gotta be somethin'
          Someone's still 'fraida losin'.

Nothin'
           No lives to take?

None.
           No one to rape?

No one. Ain't nobody worth doin'
Neither, cause they'se all doin' it
Nowdays. The whole world's a crime
Cage, and we'se only the sideshow.
           Then what's there to do,
           Brotha'?

Only what these people ain't doin'
No more. That's our game, ain't it?
We'll do what they hate and save 'em.
Save 'em, eh? Just you and me?

If that's the way it's gotta be, brotha'.
We'll do anything they think they don't
Need; get 'em help and take away pills
That ain't tamin' them. We'll get 'em
Back on their feet, then we'll restart
The game and sweep 'em down again
When it's painful for 'em.
           Amen to that, brotha'.

Author's Note: Completely different than the usual. I thought I'd give it a try. I don't know whether this is more of a poem or a conversation, but something about it seemed poetic to me.
