To an old friend

by Gary Hoffmann

We never write anymore
I check on occassion, hoping you've posted something
or that I have something to post
to be read by people sitting at their computers
as if that's any worse than being Published
and read in coffee shops or living rooms

We used to talk about poetry
Sitting long hours entreating our respective muses
for that inspiration which was the entrate
of our hours and days of waiting
Is this even poetry?
towards this or that we wrote
Have I so dulled my senses with science
that the poetical physics I once envisioned is gone?

I'm no Whitman,
but when did we stop seeking that expressiveness
that transcends the limitations of language?
Write. Keep writing the words in your heart
that once flowed so easily.
Write and I will write.
Inspire me again, old friend,
that we not forget we once were poets.
