On The Road To Falluja

by Jersey D Gibson

Driving down the highway,
sun setting on our backs.
Another bend on the the road,
brings another morter attack.

Setting up another detail,
NOD's swinging on my head.
Up ahead, another IED,
another soldier's dead.

Back at the fire base,
barbwire marks our home.
Surrounded by sandbags,
why do I feel so alone?

On the back of my Humvee,
I sing to you, Ol' Glory.
Picking up some ammo cans,
that contains another friend.
Sand and grit, tobacco spit,
carried a buddy in my arms.
Swear haven't seen it so bad,
on this side of Bhagdad.

Helicopters hovering,
Bradleys leading the way.
Here comes another RPG,
making this a bad day.

Got another order,
got another mission.
Seems I've survived this long,
on this road of perdition.

Haven't seen water,
in about a week.
Sandstorm blowing so bad,
don't even notice the heat.

On the top of my Humvee,
I hold on to you, Ol' Glory.
I pick up another streacher,
that holds another friend.
Marking the days with AK's,
and rounds punching through my doors.
How much longer until I see,
Fiddler's Green or home?

Saw another plane taken down,
saw another convoy destroyed.
Iraqis screaming all about murder,
some of it was their own.

More caskets than I can count,
more than I dare to see.
More Infantry to lead us to Hell,
the road's paved too well with them.

High time, the bell has rung,
time to play Russian Roulette.
Seems I've got the chance,
to play with my life again.

On the seat of my Humvee,
I'm wrapped in you, Ol' Glory.
Seems I took to many chances,
my numbers finally come up.
He served us well, served us proud,
another scout on Eternal Watch.
He did what he did best,
killing his fellow man.
